- The Mastercard Economics Institute’s mission is to drive macroeconomic thought leadership for customers, partners and policymakers
- The Economics Institute was launched in 2020 to analyze and forecast emerging trends using unique, high frequency, and actionable economic measurement to drive smarter decisions and better outcomes for all stakeholders
- The institute produces expert forecasting and bespoke analysis; vertical specific scenario assessment; global, regional, and local economic views incorporating spend insights; unique economic measurements
- The institute constitutes a team of economists and data scientists that utilize & synthesize assets both from within Mastercard and beyond to bring powerful insights to life
About The Role
We are looking for a software engineer to join Mastercard’s Economics Institute’s engineering team. This individual will be critical to growing the institute’s ability to support and drive the expansion and delivery of developed outputs. Today the team is responsible for public, private, and commercial reports, applications, and the underlying software. We are looking for an individual who will:
- push the limits of development, architecture, and best practices
- have an interest in and demonstrated knowledge of modeling, financial transformations, and business-focused KPI measurement
- actively communicate with stakeholders, product groups, and potential clients
- develop software packages, functions, applications, and modules
- work directly in or with direct communication to R – our core software base
- eager to adopt & integrate the latest technologies such as React.js, Spark, Hadoop / Hive
- be comfortable creating captivating visuals with Highcharts.js, the counterpart R library, or other dynamic chart libraries
- have advanced knowledge of, or willingness to quickly learn JavaScript, HTML, CSS
- work with databases (SQL, Hadoop, Spark), & expose end to end solutions via API
- possess a wide breadth of knowledge around data wrangling, modeling, reporting, automation
About You
We are looking for someone that is entrepreneurial, willing to thoughtfully take risks, and take on increasing levels of responsibility and scope. Ideally, you’ll have experience or exposure to R which is the base for many of our core assets, projects, and packages.
- comfortable working in a fast-paced and fluid environment, staying calm under pressure
- previous client-facing experience, proficient in synthesizing data to create insights, great storyteller
- familiarity with economics and econometrics is a plus
- creative & passionate about statistics/math, economics, data, technology, and its applications, with an entrepreneurial mindset open to new ideas
- active contributor to github, gitlab, bitbucket, or a code-based blog (we want to see your code/contributions!)
- excitement for R, software engineering, modeling, and tidy (or clean) code principles
- fluent in more than one programming language and/or paradigm
- the ability to read code and ‘get it’
- strong collaborator and independent thinker
- excellent at managing multiple projects and tight timelines with an ability to reprioritize and remain calm under pressure
- evidence of creativity, innovation, and unorthodox thinking
